Objectives of the Visit
Dear friends, for the trip to Indonesia, we manage to see one potential area in Jakarta, District Tangerang, village name Teluk Naga.
Dec 2010, i will be visiting another site in Kalimantan. The biggest takeaway is we manage to convince local donors to sponsor a piece of land for us to build the 1st SOUL center.
The next visit, i will aim to achieve 3 things.
Site visit/selection
1) Visit 2 more sites to widen the options in hand. Also to take note of travel costs and challenges in reaching these areas. I had set some criteria to deem the areas suitable. For example: no further from a hospital by 2 hours, a small town for supplies, cost of building materials. All this will enhance my building, medical evacuation and R&R plans.
Wood Mastery
2) Link up with master carpenters and visit their work sites or any ongoing projects to understand the quality of their workmanship. This will give us an insight of the duration it'll take to build a structure. Also enhance our understanding in what kind of material is readily available for us to use.
Flow of activity
3) Discuss the layout of the compound, as we need to manage a good flow, for example, in how we register the kids for classes, give out school materials in an orderly fashion ie.... stationary, uniform, school shoes, give rice (one of the main project), screen movies (as part of CR), give vaccination (a future project), All these flows will help us structure the layout. This discussion includes building the compound in phases.
Conclusion
After this visit, the locals will need time to digest the proposals and maybe propose any changes to the layout or designs. As they are experts in the trade and well versed in material usage, we hope to work towards preserving their way of living. Functioning together as a partnership will win us some CR (community relations) points.
That's all the update i have for now. Please stay tune for the next update.
Best regards,
Philip Lee aka GP
